  • Traditional Japanese Futon?

Before you purchase any futon, please take the time to investigate a little more. Our Japanese futon are made in Kochi, Japan in a factory owned and operated by a true futon master, Master Ikeuchi. He has been making futon for over 50 years. Of course he doesn't make every futon, these days, but his son and son-in-law (who he personally trained for decades) do. And if you understand Japanese craftsmanship, then you know that nothing goes out the door that Master Ikeuchi wouldn't be proud to put his name on—his reputation is everything to him! Even in Japan, there are plenty of machine-made, mass-produced cheaper futon available. Just because it says, "Made in Japan" is no guarantee of quality. However, when we say "Traditional Japanese Futon," we mean exactly that. Over 50 years of experience goes into every shikibuton & kakebuton we sell on
  • "Customer service was Prompt, Reliable and Easy to Understand." (Testimonial)

I appreciated that this site had answers and information that made sense to a non-Asian audience. Some of the other sites I went to had poor customer service ratings and vague answers to people's questions. I felt more comfortable knowing that I was ordering from a company that had both local and international people working with them to present a clear picture of what I was ordering. I felt confident that it would be high quality work and was willing to order promptly once I chose which futon I wanted. I wanted a bed that was easy to air out in the sun and fit into my car! That's what this is and I was able to carry it from the pick up point with only one arm! You can't do that with a traditional mattress?! Thank, so much! Now I don't have to sleep on air mattresses anymore! Blessings, Adora"
  • Futon Set (Shikibuton-Kakebuton): Shawna F's Awesome Pics and Testimonial

I really liked the options that J LIfe had to offer, but I was deterred by the terrible reviews I found online. That's when I found :) Although I already had a fabric style in mind, I found something that I liked instead on your website. My futon arrived in a very timely manner in excellent condition; I was thrilled as my purchase exceeded my expectations! Dean was very quick to return my call, and was extremely helpful and pleasant! I ordered a double futon set and am very happy with my purchase. :)
  • This Futon is the Best I Ever Used!

This futon is the best I ever used ! The only problem I encountered is that the width of futon is a little shorter than expected (abour 10 cm). I should have paid more attention on the dimension of futon when I placed the order. But it is still a GREAT futon. Thank you very much.
  • "Real Japanese Futon are Hard To Find"

My biggest obstacle to ordering was that I found it very hard to find a website [that sold real Japanese futon]. I eventually found [] through a forum post or something like that. These futons are awesome. Thanks!
  • Futon Testimonial: "Even Better than Expected!" Said Jared from Wisconsin

Great quality, much better than what I had when I lived in Japan many years ago. Glad we found something authentic and not mass-produced. Your YouTube video is what sealed the choice. (Click the post headline to read more and view pictures.)
  • Authentic Japanese Futon Review with Pictures Sent from Our Happy Customer from New York

The purchasing experience with is superb. Any questions or special requests are met with a prompt and thoughtful reply. Dean quickly gained my trust concerning futon so I was happy to expand my purchase to include zabuton and kushyon. The quality of the products are as promised, and I now am enjoying a slice of the look, feel and smell of traditional Japan. Thanks Dean, for sharing the joy of this exceptional craftsmanship with me!
  • Foam Futon Mattress; Just Say "No!"

Unfortunately, becoming uncomfortable is only part of the problem with a foam futon Mattress. Go wander through a foam factory for a half-hour or so and it won't take long for you to realize there are some nasty chemicals involved in the production of foam. Of course this industry has been forced to make some changes in the chemicals they've used over the years (as the hole in our ozone continued to grow!), but that doesn't mean that this billion-dollar industry just rolled over like a puppy and became "green." (That's what lobbyists are for, right?) Frankly, with today's technology that isn't really possible. But generally, if you're sticking a product in a box with a couple of custom foam end-caps to protect it while it ships, this isn't really that big of a problem. However . . . does that mean that you're can safely spend every night sleeping on foam? Take a little time doing a Google search for the terms "off-gassing" or "out gassing" as it is also called and you will quickly began to see that poly foam as a bedding choice is not a good idea.

  • Futon Fan? Welcome to Our Blog

Welcome to's first Futon Blog post.

You know, we spend roughly half of our lives sleeping.  Most Westerners spend that time two feet off the floor in a bed with a mattress on a box spring. That being said, an ever increasing number of non-Japanese are discovering the advantages of sleeping a little closer to the earth on a futon.

However, we have to draw a clear distinction between so-called "Western style" futons (manufactured for the Western market) and authentic Japanese made futon that you will find in Japan.

Hi I'm Dean Fuller, the creator of and I've lived in Japan for over six years now.  Aside from the occasional night spent in a hotel somewhere, my wife Yumi and I have slept on an authentic Japanese style futon since the first night I moved to Japan.

    My First Authentic Futon Experience

In September of 2007 I made my first visit to Japan.  At the time I was looking for an "authentic Japanese experience" so instead of staying in hotels I found a website that specialized in Ryokan (Japanese style hotels) and guest-houses (essentially what Westerners call "bed & breakfasts").

At the time I wasn't really aware of what a fantastic decision I had made to do this (I basically had "stumbled" on the Ryokan site), but looking back in retrospect it is the perfect way to experience Japan.  This allowed me to meet and interact more directly with Japanese people and also to experience my first night's sleep on a true Japanese futon. (It was also at a Ryokan that I met my then future wife Yumi . . . but that is another story for another telling.)

    The Reluctant Futon Tourist

To be honest, because I had owned a Western style futon before, though I was very open to experiencing something new, I was less than optimistic about sleeping on the floor on a futon in the Ryokan.  But I soon discovered that I had nothing to worry about as it quickly became clear that authentic Japanese futon had absolutely nothing in common with those lumpy, monstrosities called "futon" that sell in the West. The futon shops in my hometown of Sacramento, CA may have said they sold "futon" . . . but the word "futon" is where all similarities ended.

I won't go into details here as I've created a whole series of videos you'll find on the home page, but my first month traveling through Japan staying in Ryokan began my love-affair with the Japanese  . . . and the  Japanese futon.

Your Sleep Needs are Very Individual . . .

Of course the type of bed you need to get your best night's sleep is a very individual thing, so I won't say futon are the best solution for everyone. However, I can honestly say that if you—and your back—prefer a firmer but very comfortable bed, then you will likely discover futon to be the perfect bed for you. (Yes! "firm" and "comfort" are not mutually exclusive.)

    Comfort Factors Aside . . .

Comfort aside, futon are also fantastically convenient when used as daybeds and guest beds as well. They're easy to set out, clean and store away.

And to top it all of, frankly, authentic, quality hand-made Japanese futons are just plain cool! They look fantastic—there is nothing like them in the West! (By the way, they're also so well made you'll likely be using yours for many years to come.)

Once again, welcome to, take your time to check out the videos in our buying guide and discover why our futons are nothing like what you'll see made in the Western market.
